Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a medical specialty closely linked to gynecology. However, the two aren’t the same. Obstetrics specifically focuses on your health and your baby’s health from the time of conception, throughout your pregnancy, to the time you give birth and shortly after.

Your board-certified obstetrician at North Atlanta Ob/Gyn can provide treatments and services, including surgery, to make your pregnancy as smooth as possible. They also provide high-risk obstetric care if you or your baby have health complications that could compromise the health of the pregnancy.

Your obstetrician can help you create a birth plan that makes you feel confident and safe. If any unforeseen complications occur during your pregnancy, they can provide necessary testing and treatment to get the pregnancy back on track.

What is high-risk obstetrics care?

High-risk obstetrics care is necessary when a condition or unusual circumstance puts the pregnancy at risk. The North Atlanta Ob/Gyn team provides expert high-risk obstetrics care for pregnancies affected by the following circumstances and more:

Multiples

Getting pregnant with twins, triplets, or even more babies is exciting, but it can come with many risks that don’t apply to single births. You’re more likely to develop a condition called preeclampsia or to go into early labor.

Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, usually doesn’t come with symptoms. You may have hypertension prior to getting pregnant and some people might not realize they have hypertension until they start visiting a doctor for their pregnancy. Or you may develop gestational hypertension while pregnant, typically diagnosed after 20 weeks or closer to delivery. Gestational hypertension typically resolves itself after delivery.  Your obstetrics provider monitors you closely throughout the pregnancy and will recommend necessary treatments to help ensure you and your baby are healthy during the duration of your pregnancy.

Diabetes

Diabetes can occur before your pregnancy, or you might develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. The high levels of blood sugar resulting from diabetes can put your baby’s health at risk, so your obstetrician needs to monitor your baby’s health closely. They can also help you manage your diabetes with nutritional counseling and medications.

Thyroid disorders

If you have a thyroid disorder, you may be at a higher risk for pregnancy complications like miscarriage and fetal growth restriction. Your obstetrics specialist provides personalized treatment and monitoring for you and your baby.
