Ultrasound

UUltrasound scanning or sonography is the use of high-frequency sound waves to view images of the body. An ultrasound machine converts these sound waves into images, which can be viewed on a screen, and the areas with less density like fluid, show up as black, while progressively denser areas show up as lighter and lighter grey. The whitest image on an ultrasound is bone. Ultrasound examinations are safe and painless, and because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

Obstetric ultrasound has numerous applications:

  1. To date a pregnancy
  2. To find a silent miscarriage
  3. To detect an ectopic pregnancy
  4. Anatomy scan at 20 weeks to detect some birth defects
  5. Fetal cardiac evaluation
  6. Evaluation of the placenta
  7. Evaluation of fetal position and growth
  8. Amount of amniotic fluid
  9. Number of fetuses
  10. Gender Screening
  11. Evaluation of the cervix in instances of pre-term labor

Gynecologic ultrasound:

  1. Used to evaluate the pelvis, uterus, ovaries and tubes
  2. Identify pelvic masses: fibroids, ovarian cysts
  3. Identify causes of abnormal bleeding
  4. Identify causes of pelvic pain
  5. Check correct placement of an IUD
